How much may I request from a journal or book via the Scan and Send Service?

Answer

The Scan and Send service allows UCL staff, students and NHS borrowers to request scanned copies of book chapters and journal articles that are held by Library Services. Please note only 5 active requests are allowed per person.

Visit this page for information on how to submit a Scan and Send request and specific FAQs.

Due to copyright restrictions we may only scan:

  • up to one article from a journal issue
  • up to one chapter (or up to 10% of any other published work).

This is how copyright applies here:

  • Copyright law stops us from making any copy of a copyrighted work (e.g. a book) without permission from the rights owner.
  • However, the law also has copyright exceptions, which allow us to copy reasonable amounts from a work for specific purposes, without permission. One of these exceptions (CDPA 42A) allows libraries to provide one article from a journal issue or a 'reasonable proportion' of any other published work (including a book) - however this is only for 'non-commercial research and private study' and the copy is not to be shared with anyone else.  One chapter or up to 10% from a book is generally understood to be a 'reasonable proportion'.
  • When you request the scan, you will be asked to complete a declaration form asking you to confirm that this is for your own use (non-commercial research or private study). This is to make sure that the copy is provided to you within what copyright law allows.
  • If you need more than these amounts, for example three chapters from the same book, then you will need to get the whole book via the Click and Collect service
