How can I make the Zotero button appear on the browser beside the search bar?

Answer

The toolbar button is the Zotero Connector. Clicking it allows Zotero to download 'metadata' or the description of the bibliographic record embedded on the webpage into your Zotero library. To install the Connector, follow the instructions outlined below:

  1. Go tZotero.org/download.
  2. Zotero will automatically recognise your browser and provide you with the option to download and install the Zotero Connector. It has connectors for Chrome, Edge and Firefox.
  3. Install the connector for your browser, unless you are using Safari. Zotero has packaged the Safari connector into version 7 so it does not need to be downloaded separately.

The Zotero Connector should now appear on your toolbar. If it does not, you will need to make it visible.

On the Chrome browser, for example, you have to 'pin' the extension for it to appear on your browser beside the search bar.

On Safari, you will need to go to Settings, Extensions, and make it visible by checking the box as shown in the image below.

Then give it the permission to work on different websites, such as on Explore, publishers' sites, Google, Google Scholar and on Google Docs.

Note! If a database does not allow you to use the connector, you will nee to use the Export function. For more information, see Getting Started Zotero Guide.
